The ornament
Oil on linen, 25.5cm wide x 40.5cm tall.
This painting shows a small china ornament stood on a window sill looking out through the window. The window is of plain glass with a white frame. The window is in two parts, the upper part being a horizontally opening casement window. No window fittings are visible.
The ornament sits slightly to the left of centre on the window sill. It faces the window, so we see the back of the ornament but also it's reflection in the window. The figure wears a white robe under a pale blue cloak and a white head scarf. It might be interpreted to be a representation of Mary (mother of Jesus).
This side of the window is brightly lit. In the window we see an out-of-focus house and possibly trees. The wall surrounding the window is caramel colour, painted it seems, with a horizonal break.
